Frequently asked questions

Nova Clip is a video editor that runs entirely in your web browser. It has a multi-track timeline, color grading, transitions, text templates, chroma key, speed ramps and audio tools — without installing anything.

No. Accounts are optional — open the editor and start working without signing up. If you like, you can create an account with Google or email; the editor works the same either way.

Nova Clip works best in the latest Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on desktop, which have the fastest canvas rendering and the widest export support. Firefox and Safari work for most editing, but export options can be more limited.

The editor is designed for a desktop or laptop with a keyboard and mouse. It may load on a tablet, but small screens and touch input make timeline editing difficult.

You need a connection to load the editor the first time. After it has loaded, editing and exporting happen locally on your device.

Any video or audio format your browser can decode. MP4 (H.264), WebM, MP3, WAV and OGG work everywhere; MOV and MKV depend on the browser and codec. You can also import .srt/.vtt subtitles and .cube LUTs.

There is no upload, so there is no server limit — the limit is your computer's memory. In Chrome and Edge, Nova Clip reads audio in chunks and writes large exports (over about 400 MB) straight to a file you choose, so hour-long videos work; we test with a 60-minute video. Other browsers hold the finished export in memory, so very long exports there may need a lower resolution or quality.

The browser probably can't decode that codec. Convert the file to MP4 (H.264 + AAC) with a free tool such as HandBrake and try again.

Yes. Your edit is autosaved in your browser, so reopening the editor restores your timeline. For a permanent copy, use Save project to download a .nova.json file you can load later. Note that the project file stores your edits, not the media — keep your original clips.

Move the playhead to the cut point, select the clip and press S. See the keyboard shortcuts for every key.

Yes — Ctrl+Z to undo and Ctrl+Y to redo (use ⌘ on a Mac).

Place the green-screen clip on a track above your background, select it and turn on Chroma Key. Pick the background color and adjust threshold and edge softness. Details are in the User Manual.

Yes. Put the clip on an upper track, select it and use the Picture-in-Picture controls to choose a corner preset or set the size and position yourself.

MP4 (H.264) when your browser supports recording it, otherwise WebM (VP9). Chrome and Edge usually support MP4.

In Chrome and Edge on a desktop, Nova Clip uses fast export: it decodes and encodes frames directly with WebCodecs, usually several times faster than real time. Projects that use speed changes, reverse or freeze frames — and browsers without WebCodecs — use real-time export, which takes about as long as the video; keep the tab visible while it runs.

Yes. Put the playhead on the frame and press F to download it as a PNG image.

No. Exported videos contain only your content.

No. Your media is processed inside your browser and never sent to a server. See the Privacy Policy for the details.

If you create an account, your name, email and profile photo (for Google sign-in). If you use the contact form, your name, email and message, which we use to reply. We also count page views anonymously — no cookies, no IP addresses, nothing that identifies you — and skip counting when your browser sends Do Not Track. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
